I ask students to use two reading strategies when we are using the text book.
Inner Speech is used when you are asked to read silently and alone. This is a silent dialogue you have with yourself. You might be activating prior knowledge or creating mental pictures in your head. You automatically associate new learning with past experiences. Part of inner speech is learning to monitor your reading and self regulate your speed and comprehension.
Thinking Out Loud is the strategy we use when the class is reading together and out loud. This strategy encourages class participation and promotes active listening skills. We use the popcorn style where as soon as one student stops reading, and thinking out loud, another student can begin.
Both of the Inner Speech and Think Out Loud strategies ask students to think and make connections while reading.
When reading out loud, you stop from time to time and orally complete sentences like these:
- I think the main idea is…
- So far, I’ve learned…
- This reminds me of…
- That didn’t make sense.
- I predict that …..
- I was confused by…
- We learned about this …
- This is similar to…
- I disagree …...
Both the reader and the class are able to see connections between the text and their life experiences, or other books, movies, and subjects that they are familiar with.
