After being released by the Powhatan, John Smith returned to Jamestown in January 1608. The conditions were desperate. Many were freezing or starving. They received help from Pocahontas against her father's wishes.
In 1609, 400 new settlers arrived expecting that the colony was well prepared. The winter of 1609-1610 was known as the "Starving Time".There had been a terrible drought the previous summer and it was impossible to feed the huge number of new colonists. The Powhatan no longer wished to share their food. The drought had ruined their own crops and like the white colonists, the natives were starving too. The colonists began stealing food from the native people. Bitter feelings between the Jamestown settlers and Powhatan Indians resulted in conflict. The Powhatan surrounded the fort and refused to allow the white settlers to leave and search for food. Historians speculate that the Powhatan planned to starve the colonists to death. They were nearly successful. At the end of the long winter, only 60 of the original 500 colonists were still alive. ON PAGE 26 of your notebook. Create a 3 column chart like the one below. Make a list of words, people, locations, occupations, discoveries, and hardships that you associate with the colony. You can add words and illustrations to your wordle as we continue this study. The Powhatan Indians lived along the shores of Virginia for centuries before Europeans arrived. There were more than 14,000 natives living in the area surrounding Jamestown when the first English ships arrived. On Page 20 of your notebook, create a two column T Chart like the one below. Visit http://www.bigorrin.org/powhatan_kids.htm and read the page for facts and information about the Powhatan. Include at least 3 interesting pieces of information in each column.
About 100 men and boys landed on the coast of Virginia in May of 1607. They founded Jamestown on an island in the middle of the James River. Although Natives lived in areas surrounding Jamestown, they did not inhabit the island where the colonists chose to settle. (Maybe the Natives knew better.) Fifty Nine of the colonists thought of themselves as "Gentlemen". They came searching for gold and thought they were above doing the physical labor required to set up a colony. Other than Captain John Smith, very few knew anything about survival in the wilderness. Read "Early Jamestown Colony" and answer the following questions in your notebook on page 21. Introduction:
In this chapter you have read about the growth of the United States across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. This period of westward movement is known as MANIFEST DESTINY. Americans and other immigrants moved into Texas at the invitation of the Mexican government. After several years however, the Mexican government realized that these new settlers were determined to follow their own rules. The Texans (mostly Americans) resented the restrictions that the Mexican government began to impose on them. This led to the war for Texas independence. One of the most famous battles of this war took place in San Antonio at the Alamo. Day 1: Visit The Alamo (click here) website and read about the history of the Alamo. • Read about The Alamo’s Historic Past. http://www.thealamo.org/history/index.html Day 2: Defenders. WHO AM I?
